In the Army they say never volunteer for anything, well I did and never regretted it. I was with the RAOC and when the opportunity to do an Air Maintainance Course came along I grabbed it.
I went to RAF Watchfield for my training and within a few months found myself At RAF Khormaksar Aden attached to 16
SQN Air Despatch. In those days we flew in Beverlys, twin pioneers ,Argosy, and underslung loads with westland wessex and Belvadere helicopters. I did several sorties dropping seac packs and 1 ton containers.I visted most of the small airfields in the middle east during my tour of duty there.Mid term we did a survival excercise in Kenya stoni athi game park and was there when Kenya became independant.I also managed a couple of weeks in Bahrain which I always remember was extremely hot during in the day. The Arabian nights were cold on that Island.
somewhere in between I had several trips up country
at the Radfan camp living under canvas.Looking back we did quite a lot in a two year stint but I dont think it seemed to go that quickly when we were there.
